Central 70 Project

Process control and field & laboratory materials testing for the transformation of I-70 through Denver.

  • 10 MICorridor Modernized
  • 200K+Vehicles Daily
  • 1,200Businesses Served

Modernizing a critical Denver corridor.

Central 70 was the largest project in CDOT’s history: a $1.2 billion reconstruction of 10 miles of Interstate 70 between Brighton Boulevard and Chambers Road, a corridor that carries more than 200,000 vehicles a day and supports some 1,200 businesses. The project added a new express lane in each direction, removed a 56-year-old viaduct, lowered the interstate between Brighton and Colorado Boulevards, and built a four-acre park over the highway to reconnect the Elyria-Swansea neighborhood to the rest of the city.

Working alongside Kiewit Infrastructure Co., Vivid Engineering provided process control and field and laboratory materials testing for the project. Our technicians tested soils, concrete, asphalt, masonry, shotcrete, and aggregates throughout construction, verifying that every material placed met CDOT’s quality standards on one of the most complex urban highway builds in the country.

City of Cañon City Referendum 2A Program

Citywide street program, Cañon City, CO 81212

In November 2016, Cañon City voters approved Referendum 2A, a one-percent sales tax increase dedicated exclusively to contracting out street repair and replacement. The tax generates an average of $3.5 million a year across a 10-year program — $9 million of design-build work in the first year, 2017, followed by annual design-bid-build programs every year since.

Vivid serves as the City's prime consultant and owner's representative for the program. Our team performs geotechnical investigations; prepares pavement designs for composite pavement, full-depth reclamation, and asphalt and concrete mill-and-overlay; and delivers civil plans and specifications covering roadway plan and profile, utility relocations, drainage, streetscape and ADA compliance, Safe Routes to School, stormwater management, quantities, and engineer's estimates, with Wilson & Company preparing civil plans as a subconsultant. Vivid supports bid document preparation, bid award, and pre-construction meetings, then serves as construction engineer through the build — providing construction inspection, quality management, and materials testing on every project. The result is a program that has steadily rebuilt the streets Cañon City residents voted to fix.

    Academy Boulevard Improvements

South Academy Boulevard, Bijou Street to Airport Road, Colorado Springs, CO

South Academy Boulevard is one of Colorado Springs' hardest-working arterials, and decades of heavy traffic had left its pavement, concrete, and drainage in poor condition. The City's $62.5 million South Academy Boulevard Improvements Project, funded through the voter-approved Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority, is rebuilding 18 lane miles in two segments — Bijou Street to Airport Road, and East Fountain Boulevard to Jet Wing Drive. The work replaces worn pavement and base, rebuilds curb and gutter, adds a multi-use path, relocates Colorado Springs Utilities water and wastewater lines, and installs new inlets, manholes, and storm pipe to end chronic standing water.

Vivid Engineering leads quality assurance testing and is part of the inspection team for the project. Our technicians sample and test soils, aggregate base, concrete, and asphalt as each phase goes in, keeping results in the contractor's hands so work can keep moving through a corridor that stays open to traffic throughout construction. Segment 1 wrapped up in 2024, with the southern segment scheduled for completion in 2026.

    I-25/Cimarron Interchange Design Build

I-25 and Cimarron Street (US 24) interchange, Colorado Springs, CO

The I-25/Cimarron Street (US 24) interchange is the gateway to downtown Colorado Springs and one of the busiest junctions in the Pikes Peak region. Decades of poor roadway performance — settlement of embankments and walls on soft soils along Fountain Creek — had made it a persistent maintenance problem. CDOT's $77 million design-build reconstruction, delivered with Kraemer North America, completely rebuilt the interchange: new bridge foundations and bridges, new embankments, numerous MSE retaining walls, temporary and permanent pavements, improvements to the major drainages, and culvert and jack-and-bore utility installations.

Vivid Engineering supported the project with quality oversight, construction inspection and materials testing, geotechnical design, and structural fill monitoring. Because of the corridor's history of settlement, significant analysis, design, and construction monitoring were performed to protect the new embankments and retaining walls — work grounded in our team's deep experience with DOT and FHWA design-build requirements, procedures, and specifications. The result is a modern interchange built to perform on ground that had troubled the corridor for decades.
