Transportation

Built for CDOT and local-agency work

Transportation is where Vivid Engineering Group started and where most of our people spend their days. We provide construction inspection, owner acceptance (OA) testing, and quality assurance administration on projects ranging from a single interchange to multi-year, design-build corridors like Central 70, the I-25 South Gap, and the I-70 Floyd Hill project. Our inspectors are certified to the CDOT, WAQTC, ACI, and CAPA standards the specifications require, and our three AASHTO-accredited laboratories in Colorado Springs, Denver, and Pueblo West turn around soils, concrete, and asphalt results while they can still affect the work.

We serve the work from both sides of the table. For CDOT and municipal owners we act as the agency’s eyes in the field — documenting pay quantities, verifying materials, and keeping the project’s testing checklist current for audit. For general contractors we provide the independent process-control and acceptance testing that keeps a paving or structures schedule moving. Either way, the deliverable is the same: a project record the owner can accept and a finished facility built to plan.

Beyond the field, our geotechnical engineers provide subsurface investigations, pavement design, and retaining wall and bridge foundation recommendations, and our environmental staff support NEPA clearance, materials management, and stormwater compliance on the same corridors.

    2C Road Improvement

Citywide road program, Colorado Springs, CO

In 2015, Colorado Springs voters approved the 2C sales tax to tackle a backlog of failing streets, and they renewed it in 2019 and again in 2024. Since the program began in 2016 it has repaved more than 1,900 lane miles, rebuilt roughly 400 miles of curb and gutter, and installed thousands of new and retrofitted pedestrian ramps across the city — one of the largest sustained paving efforts in Colorado, with about half of every dollar going to the concrete beside the road.

Vivid Engineering serves as one of the lead quality assurance testing firms for the program's concrete and asphalt work. Our technicians test and document paving, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and pedestrian ramps across each year's project list, verifying that every placement meets City specifications. That oversight protects the long-term durability of the investment and helps the City deliver smoother streets and better accessibility, year after year.

    30th Street Corridor

30th Street, Fontanero Street to Garden of the Gods Road, Colorado Springs, CO

30th Street is the main route into Garden of the Gods Park, carrying park visitors, neighborhood traffic, and cyclists on a narrow, winding two-lane road with little margin for error. The City of Colorado Springs' 30th Street Corridor Improvement Project rebuilt roughly three miles between Mesa Road and Fontanero Street: widening the roadway with paved multi-use shoulders, adding a roundabout at Gateway Road, upgrading intersections, building a pedestrian underpass, and installing a new storm sewer system with a water quality pond. More than 2,000 feet of retaining walls and 6,300 feet of soldier pile were needed to hold the widened road on the hillside.

Vivid Engineering led quality assurance testing and served on the construction inspection team for the project, verifying soils, concrete, and asphalt — including some 14,000 tons of asphalt and 21,000 feet of curb and gutter — against project specifications. The improvements strengthened emergency access and evacuation routes and created safer travel for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians on the way into one of the region's most visited parks.

    Academy Boulevard Improvements

South Academy Boulevard, Bijou Street to Airport Road, Colorado Springs, CO

South Academy Boulevard is one of Colorado Springs' hardest-working arterials, and decades of heavy traffic had left its pavement, concrete, and drainage in poor condition. The City's $62.5 million South Academy Boulevard Improvements Project, funded through the voter-approved Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority, is rebuilding 18 lane miles in two segments — Bijou Street to Airport Road, and East Fountain Boulevard to Jet Wing Drive. The work replaces worn pavement and base, rebuilds curb and gutter, adds a multi-use path, relocates Colorado Springs Utilities water and wastewater lines, and installs new inlets, manholes, and storm pipe to end chronic standing water.

Vivid Engineering leads quality assurance testing and is part of the inspection team for the project. Our technicians sample and test soils, aggregate base, concrete, and asphalt as each phase goes in, keeping results in the contractor's hands so work can keep moving through a corridor that stays open to traffic throughout construction. Segment 1 wrapped up in 2024, with the southern segment scheduled for completion in 2026.
